So how can it possibly be that our students are doing so poorly in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics? The other question to ask is, how many students, for example, are learning to play the bassoon, or sing enough classical music or perform enough Shakespeare to require specialized instruction? Why can't their present teachers teach these things since they seem to be requirements. Do we really need a special wall to be built so the students can cover it with glass mosaics? How long will such a wall last in a public school? How many public performances did Cicely Tyson School produce last year (not counting the Unified Marching Band performances), since Tyson seems to be getting most of these artists? How many Cicely Tyson graduates are pursuing music degrees in college (not counting the Unified Marching Band graduates)? How many artists in residence worked with the Unified Marching Band last year? (Answer - zero - the EOUMB did it all on their own). So, why are we being forced to pay (through our taxes) for things the students ought to be learning from their own teachers, who get salaries of $40,000 and up (also from our taxes)?
