Samuel De Gannes
By day Samuel De Gannes is a maintenance man for the East
Orange Board of Education, keeping the halls of Cicely Tyson
clean and tidy. In his spare time, however, Samuel De Gannes is a
collector. He collects stamps, coins, and books, mostly those
devoted to African American Culture. He doesn't collect these
things for himself, but to share with others, particularly young
people.
Each year he sets up displays of his collections
of stamps, coins and books in the various schools of East Orange.
Whenever possible, he goes along to talk to students about the
meaning of his collectibles, and answers any questions they might
have.
At the Interactive Museum of East Orange Web
site, we would like to begin helping Mr. De Gannes to share his
collections with the entire world. You can see our first display HERE, in his
collection of African American Heritage postage stamps.
It is our sad duty to inform you that Mr. Samuel
De Gannes passed away in November, 2009.
